“Local jobs safe” – Whyalla News July, 2010

OneSteel has been assured that the new tax will not have an impact on it’s Whyalla operations.

OneSteel chief executive officer Geoff Plummer said the announcement provided for a much improved resources tax structure.

“It is our understanding that the Government has confirmed the Whyalla steelworks should not be impacted by the new tax, and that how to give effect to this will be a priority of the Government’s new consultative process headed by Minister Ferguson and Don Argus,” Mr Plummer said. “We look forward to being a part of the process”.

“Whyalla refinery approval to fuel mining” – SA Buisness Journal January, 2010

The State Government has approved the construction of a $110 million diesel storage and refinery facility at Port Bonython, north of Whyalla.

Adelaide based energy company Stuart Petroleum, through its subsidiary Port Bonython Fuels, won approval to build the facility, which has the potential to become a diesel hub for South Australia’s mining and transport industries.

The projects $60 million first stage would include:

Construction of fuel unloading facilities at Port Bonython jetty.

A 5.3km fuel pipeline.

Storage tanks with a capacity more than 100 million litres.

Truck loading facilities.

The second stage would involve building a refinery, which would process oil from the Cooper Basin into diesel, and an expansion of storage capacity.

The facility would be capable of delivering up to a billion litres of diesel a year, he said.

Urban Development and Planning Minister Paul Holloway said the two-stage development would create 20 jobs in Upper Spencer Gulf during construction and a further 20 jobs once it was operating.

“That is great news for the local economy of Whyalla,” Mr Holloway said. “This proposal has been assessed by the Development Assessment Commission and I have accepted that independent authority’s recommendation that the project be given conditional approval.

“Comeback City” – Sunday Mail August 20, 2006

“After more than two decades of setbacks following its golden era as an industrial boom town, Whyalla is again a centre of opportunity and prosperity” Brad Crouch – Sunday Mail

“It’s the great comeback – a city once down on its luck has hit boom times again. Welcome to Whyalla, where a quiet economic revival is spreading ripples of prosperity throughout the region”

“Unemployment in the Iron Triangle centre has plummeted, housing prices have soared, accommodation venues are full and the falling population has stabilised and may be growing”

“There is a high level of confidence that is filtering through the entire community. We are seeing new people moving in and the return of people who used to live here” Fiona Quinn, Manager, Professionals Real Estate.

Whyalla is hot – and it has nothing to do with the temperature”

The Advertiser – Tuesday August 1, 2006
“BOOMING Whyalla has more new jobs than new people to fill them”

“Boosted by an expanding mining industry, the Spencer Gulf City has made a national list of 25 “hot towns” because its jobs growth outstripped population movement in the year to June, 2005″

Whyalla City mayor Jim Pollock believes the town is at its healthiest since the shipyards closed in 1978.

“There are really positive vibes in the city, with people buying their homes or upgrading” he said.

“A proposed $750 million desalination plant in the Upper Spencer Gulf would also prove a boost for the community”.

“A $250 Million Vote Of Faith”

The Advertiser – Wednesday August 18, 2004.
Australia’s largest manufacturer of structural steel has give the go-ahead for a $250 million conversion of its Whyalla steel plant creating up to 250 jobs.

Whyalla Mayor Jim Pollock described the news as “marvellous”. Premier Mike Rann said the move was “a huge vote of confidence for SA” “This will allow the people of Whyalla to look to the future with a high level of confidence”, he said.
